1.measwe n.度量,量度单位；标准；尺度；措施，办法；程度，范围 v．测量：有…长（或宽、高等）

【例】To improve the situation, our govemment should take more strict measuresto control advertisements.

【用】注意measure在表示“措施，办法”的时候通常用复数形式，

2.absurd adj.不合理的，荒谬的，可笑的

【例】I cannot remember these absunt stories.

我不记得这些荒唐的故事了。

//It was strange that she would entertain such an absurd idea.

她有如此荒谬的想法很奇怪（2009）

【用】absurd后面的从句中一般用“should+动词原形”。

【辨】absurd foolish silly,ridiculous

这四个词都有“愚蠢的，荒谬的”之意。absurd强调的是不符合人情或常识的，如：an absurd opinion；foolish -般指愚蠢的、可笑的，强调缺乏智慧和判断力；silly强调单纯、糊涂、没有想法，如：a silly boy；ridiculous意为“荒谬的，令人发笑的”，常会有鄙视的意味。

【例】The robber stobbed Dickens deep into his abdomen witha dagger.

5.predict v．预言，预测

【记】词根记忆：pre(预先)+dict(说)一预言，预测

【用】predict常用的句型是It's prediacd that...，意思是“预计…”。

6.enquire v．调查;询问，打听

【记】词根记忆：en(使)+quir(寻求)+e-寻求答案一询问

【例】enquire after Tom called yesterday and enquired after Helen.

汤姆昨天打电话问候了一下海伦。

【用】enquire是inquire的变体．enquire after表示“问候，询问身体状况”；若要表示“打听某事”，则用enquire upon/into sth.。

7.multiply v.使相乘;增多；繁殖，增殖

【例】Friendships multiply joys and divide grief.

8.infect vt.传染：感染;影晌

【记】词根记忆：in(使)+fect(做)一使…做一影响；感染

【例】The whole society was irlfected by these vices.
