　　之前讲到过做买卖，也就是deal，the buyer and seller bargain（买卖双方讨价还价）之后，可能说It's a deal（成交）。

　　中国学生都谙熟（be familiar with)政治经济学（political economics)。根据马克思爷爷的观点（according to Karl Marx)，商品价格最终取决于（depend on)什么？

　　supply and demand.

　　供求关系。

　　Price is determined by the relative supply and demand.

　　价格由供求关系决定。

　　depend on

　　上面讲到价格，depend on已经隆重现身一次。

　　What does price depend on?

　　价格取决于什么？

　　It depends on the relative supply and demand.

　　取决于供求关系。

　　“取决于”已经是艺术加工过的意思，本来的意思要土一些。

　　We have been used to depending upon our parents and teacher.

　　我们一直习惯于依赖我们的父母和老师。

　　But we have got to depend upon our own.

　　但我们现在必须依靠我们自己。

　　depend之表“依靠”，来自于更土的意思，就是-pend-=hang, 也就是吊。

　　不会的同志再记一次并记死了：de=down。

　　试想一盏灯在天花板上吊着（hang down from the ceiling)，晃晃悠悠，不由吊下来（hang down)变成掉下来(fall down)，完全依靠(depend upon)天花板的存在(the existence of the ceiling)，也可以说取决于天花板的大力支持(depen/d upon the support of the ceiling)。

如若不信，或者模糊，老鞋搬来救援部队：suspend。

　　先看好了：-pend-，亲兄弟，童叟无欺哈！

　　When you violate the rules in some specific manner, the traffic police may suspend your driver's license.

　　当你以某种特定的方式（manner）违规的时候，交通警察叔叔可能____你的驾照（driver's license)。

　　吊销！

　　为什么汉语与英语都用一个“吊”（pend)来表示这个意思——老鞋从未想明白。管它了！

　　再看它的名词suspense:

　　The stories of Jin Yong are full of suspenses, focusing our attentin on it all the time.

　　说的是：金庸大侠的小说充满了____，使我们时时沉浸其中。

　　没看出来的话，揭晓：“悬疑”的“悬”，就是“吊”——没听说过“悬挂”吗？

　　题外话：两个不重要的词，忍不住拿来助阵。pendulum(物理学中传说的钟摆)；pendent(首饰，当然更指身体各个部位吊着的金属非金属）。

　　depend upon之表示“依赖/取决于”，不只是depend之功。军功章里，至少也有on/upon的一半。因为on就有“依靠”之意。不信请看：

　　Don't rely on others; you are to live on your own.

　　不要靠别人；要靠自己（也叫“自力更生”）。

　　The strength of a country does not rest upon economic development alone; it rests upon education, at least to the same extent.

　　一个国家的实力不只是取决于经济发展；它至少在相同的程度上有赖于其教育水平。

　　上面“不要靠别人；要靠自己”的励志话语，也可换成下面的方式。

　　Don't be dependent on others; be independent!

　　两个形容词，因的出现而意思相反：一个“依赖于……的”，一个“不依赖于……的”或“独立的”。

　　-ent/ance，往往是形容词的尾巴；有时是名词尾巴，似-er（如persistent, important, reluctant皆形容词；assistant为“助手”即出手帮助的人，上面提过的pendent是吊着的东西)。
说到独立，而且是英语，不免想提及（refer to)今天依然有着不俗名气（enjoy remarkable reputation)的一个文件(document)：Declaration of Independence。

　　-ence/ance, 基本上是名词的尾巴（如persistence, importance, reluctance, assistance等)。
