No careers for Chinese majors?

Dear editor,
I’m a student from Xi’an International Studies University. My major is in Chinese language and literature. I feel it’s not a popular major in a school which mainly focuses on foreign language studies. And I have to admit that generally speaking we are less competitive than students of the same major from Peking University or other famous institutions. At the same time, I think Chinese majors have a limited choice of careers. I also wonder whether people pay enough attention to their native language and literature? Could you give me some career advice?
  Fruit girl

Language and literature are important, for they can give people spiritual power. We read books, we browse newspapers, even in the business environment we write proposals to impress others. It’s language that enables us to do this. So I don’t agree that Chinese language majors don’t have a lot of choices in their career. You could work in publishing, which requires good language skills. You could work in public relations, marketing or advertising, in which you can use your language skills to influence the public and your clients. You could also work in the academic field and study the Chinese language, which has a very long history. Because language study is a rather broad area, what you need to do now is find the direction you’re really keen on. Then you can focus on that area and develop related career skills.
