This is Lion Dancing, a traditional performance in Southern China.
醒狮，是中国南方的一项传统表演项目。
During which, a lion, handled by a pair of performers, makes synchronized movements to the beat, like leaping... and head thrusting... high on the iron Meihua poles.
每当锣鼓响起，一组舞者便会和着热烈的锣鼓镲，在高高的梅花桩上或是跳跃，或是昂首摆头。

But making all those facial expressions adorable and vivid, is not only the work of lion dancers, but mask makers too.

Born in a family with a tradition of making lion dancing head masks for more than 200 years, 58-year-old Li Wanzhen is the fifth generation of the family's time-honored brand - “Li’s lion head”.

She's worked as a craftswoman for more than 40 years.

There are four steps to make a lion's head mask.

The first step is the most difficult one, called binding.
第一步叫做扎，也是最难的。
We use bamboo sticks to create the skeleton of the lion's head, which was all tied up with paper.
会用竹条制作出狮头的骨架，并且用砂纸绑起来。
There are more than 1300 knots on the skeleton.
整个骨架有1300多个结口。
The second step is to paste paper on to the skeleton to make the shape.
第二步叫做扑，用砂纸纱绸把狮胚糊起来，初步成型。
The third part is painting.
第三步叫做写。
We use paint to make a face for the lion, mostly based on the 3 characters from the 3 kingdoms, Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei.
用油彩为狮子上色画脸，大多数的形象是基于三国中的三个人物，刘备、关羽和张飞。
And lastly there's the dressing.
最后一步就是装。
These manes and this mirror are all put up there in the fourth step.

Even for a veteran maker like Li Wanzhen, making a mask from scratch still takes about 10 full days, but she insists on making each of them by hand.

Li says bright colors, the right shapes and a mighty spirit in the lion's eyes are the most iconic specialties of her family brand’s masks.

The style was much favored by filmmakers of “Once Upon a Time in China” III “Dancing Lion Competition”. Li's family was asked to make lion heads for it.

She says it's not simply a kind of handicraft, but also a part of the lion dancing spirit, that can spread Spring Festival cheer.
