Hello, I'm Justine Greene with the BBC News.
The US Justice Department is investigating claims that lobbyists tried to use bribes to secure a presidential pardon for an unnamed defendant. Court paper showed that in August, prosecutors began looking into a secret lobbying scheme, possibly involving attempts to contact White House officials. The documents don't reveal the names of those involved. From Washington with the details, here's our correspondent Jon Sopel. Pardons are commonly given by outgoing presidents. And all this comes amid extensive reporting in the US that Donald Trump is considering giving preemptive pardons to his three oldest children, Don Junior, Ivanka and Eric, as well as his son in law, Jared Kushner and personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani. Not that they've been charged with anything, but to protect them from federal prosecution in the future for anything they might have done during the president's term in office.
The former French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing has died at the age of 94 after contracting COVID-19. A politician of the center-right, Giscard d'Estaing served a single term in the Elysee Palace from 1974. His 7 years in office were marked by the liberalization of laws on divorce, abortion and contraception and investment in nuclear power and high speed trains. Giscard oversaw closer European integration. But speaking to the BBC 7 years ago, he warned of the problems the EU would face if it failed to reform. 1990, we were 12, including Britain. We knew each other, we were in a harder similar position that absolutely equivalent. And then we have a wave of new entries who pushed us to 28. And we didn't change anything. So the system is unadapted. Politicians across the French political spectrum have praised what they call Giscard d'Estaing's progressive policies and his work to strengthen the European project.
The French Interior Minister says the government will launch a massive and unprecedented action against mosques suspected of fostering religious extremism. Gerald Darmanin said 76 mosques to be targeted in the coming days and some might be closed. It's the latest move by President Macron following a spate of attacks by Islamic extremists.
US government hopes to vaccinate 100 million people against coronavirus by the end of February, if it's regulator gives approval to new vaccines against the disease. A scientific adviser said this would represent 40% of adult Americans and all those considered at risk. Approval of the bionic vaccine is expected in the coming weeks and of that developed by Moderna soon after.
