Letter of Recommendation for MIPT Alumnus (01/2003)
The Physics Student admitted to MIT, Princeton, UC Berkeley, Stanford
LETTER OF RECOMENDATION
Applicant: Ivan Ivanov
Recommender: Prof. Petr P. Petrov
I have known Ivan Ivanov since February 2000. Being a second-year student, he attended my lectures on XX, and the next academic year - on YY. While attending my lectures, he showed himself as an active and hard-working student. We frequently discussed various physics problems beyond the scope of my course, and I was surprised by his remarkable analytical abilities and originality of his ideas.
After completing my courses Ivan continued to keep in touch with me.
In 2001 he joined Landau Institute Theory group. In order to be admitted to this group, Ivan successfully passed a highly competitive and difficult Landau Theoretical Minimum exam on Quantum Mechanics. This fact characterizes Ivan as a purposeful person with a great ability for independent work. He has also successfully passed non-obligatory Landau Theoretical Minimum exams on General Relativity, Statistical Mechanics and Electrodynamics of Continuous Media.
By now, Ivan's background in theoretical physics is strikingly deep and wide. In his bachelor thesis, which was in the field of quantum Hall effect, he used sophisticated techniques of modern Quantum Field Theory as well as Condensed Matter theory. Ivan’s profound knowledge of Quantum Field Theory is also proved by the fact that he has translated into Russian several chapters of XX's book "Quantum ...". His translation will be published in a few months by “Nauka”, the most respectable Russian scientific publishing company.
I regard Ivan's academic and research abilities as excellent. I'm sure that he is one of the top 2% of MIPT students. I strongly recommend him for graduate study at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Yours sincerely, 11/12/02

To Whom It May Concern:
I am proud to recommend a beloved student, Kaya Stone, for your fellowship program. I was asked to write as one who has functioned in the capacity of an employer of Kaya, but I would first like to say a few words about him as a student.
Kaya is a highly intelligent, perceptive young man. He came to our institution committed to capitalizing on the opportunity of a third year of study in Israel, and he left with the satisfaction of having accomplished that goal. Kaya grew in learning, in character, in depth of understanding. He seeks truth in each and every area of his life, whether in learning, discussing philosophy, or relating to his fellow students and his teachers. Because of his positive disposition, his reflective way of operating, and all of the character traits that make him so special, Kaya' s questions never go unanswered, and his searches always bring him to exciting new discoveries. As a student, Kaya is outstanding. As an educator, I have watched him grow, seen his talents and abilities not only in the classroom but outside its walls, when interacting with all types of people, as well.
During his time at our institution, Kaya, who as I' m sure you know is an excellent writer and publicist, also has done a good deal of work for the yeshiva. This has included the text for many public relations brochures and packets, letters to parents, potential donors, and alumni, and essentially any correspondence which I have requested that he compose. The feedback is always overwhelmingly positive, and he has done so much in that way for our yeshiva. Even today, while he studies elsewhere, he continues to do a great deal of this work for our institution, in addition to the recruiting and other services he performs for the yeshiva.
Always, in his work, Kaya is consistent, dedicated and passionate, enthusiastic, cheerful, and a pleasure to work with. He has incredible creative energies and a refreshing idealism tempered only enough to accomplish what needs to be done. I highly recommend him for any position of work, leadership, education, or any other capacity in which he can spread his excitement and share his talents with others. At our institution, we are expecting big things from Kaya in the way of educational and communal leadership in the years to come. And knowing Kaya, he will not disappoint, and probably will exceed our expectations.
Thank you once again for the opportunity to recommend such a special and impressive young man.
Sincerely Yours,
Steven Rudenstein

Dear Admissions Officer: I am very proud to recommend Skye Eubank for admission to your undergraduate university program. As her guidance counselor for three years, I have witnessed her development into a mature individual ready for her college years. Skye is a well rounded student that has always excelled academically. She is motivated, energetic, bright and above all a very genuine, compassionate person. Her grades have always been in the top of her class in all of her courses and she has participated through the years in a wide array of extracurricular activities and community services.
Her time has been spent on the softball field, on the volleyball court, in the dance studio, as part of the Honors Society and she has played a vital role in her class' Steering Committee. Her community service has included spending two days a week at St. Michaels House, a halfway house for women recovering from drugs and alcohol. She spends time assisting the Meals on Wheels program, has helped to build three homes with Habitat for Humanity and does volunteer office where needed around the school. Unlike most of her fellow students, Skye knows what she wants to major in (Social Work) and has stuck firm to her decision through high school. It is clear to me that Skye would be an excellent candidate for your university's Social Work program. Her tenacity and dedication speaks volumes.
I wholeheartedly recommend her to your program and wish her the very best in all future endeavours.
Sincerely,
Tiffany Vanmaker

To whom it may concern,
As the Director of the Department of Computer Sciences of Wuhan University of Technology, which is one of the most prestigious engineering universities in China, I deem it a pleasure to recommend Mr. Nathan Wang, one of the outstanding students in our department for admission and assistantship you're your graduate program
Since his enrollment into our department with remarkable entrance scores, Wang has embodied the fine character of strong inquisition and industriousness in learning, which has gained him significant academic success during his college years. I am aware of his distinctive academic performance as reflected in his transcripts. He maintains a very high GPA that places him in the top 5% out of 150 through the past 3 years, winning scholarships of the department almost every year. In the College English Speech Contest organized by the Teaching Committee of Hubei Province, he excelled most of other contestants, winning the first prize in the Region-wide preliminary contest, and the third prize in the final of the provincial level, being the sole participant representing our university.
I have also discovered him to be perseverant and enthusiastic in studies and extracurricular activities. During the Military Life Experiencing period, a compulsory training program for all Chinese college freshmen upon their immediate entrance, he was granted the title of Excellent Trainee thanks to his painstaking training efforts, though the training was extraordinarily rigorous and demanding. In the past college years, he has enthusiastically taken part in many students' societies, such as Computer Society, Road to American English and Literature Garden, etc, which has both seen his versatility and organizing ability by serving in quite a few positions.
Speaking of his organizing ability, I have to mention two well-known events under his active involvement and organization. One is the College Computer Festival of Hubei Province and the other is the Science and Culture Week of our school. In the first one, he was one of the chief representatives from our department to undertake this provincial level activity. His enthusiastic involvements in liaison, coordination and the contestants' performance evaluation had won him the honorable title of Active Organizing Participant specially granted by our department for this important occasion. In the second one of Science and Culture Week, organized in our school in 1999, he was a chief organizer. And it was so successful that it attracted more than one thousand students to participate, who were all satisfied with this event for the opportunity of a better understanding of the past and future of science in China.
As the Director, I am deeply impressed and moved by his capability of organizing and his sense of involvement, which have been explicitly demonstrated through all his participation in these activities
A bright young man, with blazing intelligence, energy, and determination, Mr. Wang deserves my first-rate recommendation. Thus, I would unqualifiedly recommend him for admission into the Ph. D. program at your university and I will appreciate your sincere assistance to his admission.
Sincerely yours,
To whom it may concern,
I am pleased to recommend Mr. shilling as a worthy candidate for the Ph.D.
program at your prestigious university.
I became familiar with Mr. shilling after he joined my research group to do his bachelor thesis, XXX, in the second semester of the academic year 1997-1998 when I was an adviser for the XXX Company, a computer technology companyfounded by the Peking University. I was deeply touched by his diligence an d intelligence. During the seven-month period when he was in my group, Mr.shilling demonstrated excellent programming skills and an ability to command new technology. As an undergraduate, his work was far beyond my expectation
He was also deeply involved in one of the large projects of the Jade Bird Company, the Management Information System for XXX. In this project, we integrated geographical information and management information into the same system. His hard work won him high compliments from project managers and colleagues. He cooperated well with the other team members. He often gave valuable advice to and discussed inspiring ideas and concepts with them. It was his team spirit, which I believe is most important for scientific research that impressed me most.
As a teacher, what pleases me most is to see a student continue his study and accomplish research that would help him realize his potential. So I was very delighted when Mr. shilling told me he would like to pursue his advanced
studies in your honored computer science program. I am confident that Mr.shilling will be successful with his future computer science research and contribute greatly to your program as he did in my group.
I highly recommend Mr.shilling to your graduate program and would greatly appreciate it if you would consider accepting him. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.
