Today, we are exploring one sound W.

/w/ is a very common and important sound.
/w/是非常常见，也比较重要的发音。
Think of all the common question words in English that use this sound: when where what why.

One of the most common problems English learners face when making the /w/ sound is they change it to a /v/ sound?
英语学习者在发音时面临的最常见的问题之一是把/w/发成了/v/的音。
For example, when will you go to the store becomes, ven vill you go to the store?
例如，你什么时候去商店，变成了“ven vill you go to the store”。
Where are you going? Vere are you going?
你们打算去哪儿？Vere are you going？
Look closely while I make a /w/ sound.

You might have noticed that I use both of my lips to make the /w/ sound.

The shape of your lips and tongue changes the flow of air as it comes out of your mouth.

Tamara Jones, a pronunciation expert recommends that you practice it by imagining that you are going to kiss your grandmother.

I tell my students they have to imagine that they're kissing their grandmother.

They're going to have a very purse lip.

But you want to make sure that the space between your lips is very small.

If you are still having trouble with the /w/ sound?

Then you can use a pencil, preferably a clean pencil.

When you say /w/ your lips come close together, if you put a a clean pencil in your mouth and round your lips around it, then you can make a good /w/ sound, wet.

But when you say /v/, your lips aren't rounded like that, if you're having trouble saying /v/, try putting your finger on your Top lip, hold it up out of the way, vet.

Here is a final tip for practicing /w/ sounds: try saying words that have /w/ in them in front of a mirror.
