Adverbs can be a difficult topic for some.

If you mention the word to many native English speakers, you might get this kind of reaction.

Do not fear. Adverbs are not as scary as some might think.

For today's lesson, we will talk about just one use of adverbs: to modify verbs.
今天的课程，我们就会讨论副词的一种用法：修饰动词。
When adverbs are modifying verbs, they often answer a "how" question.
当副词修饰动词时，它们通常会用来回答“如何”的问题。
What is a "how" question? Here's an example.
什么是“如何”的问题？我来举一个例子。
Recently, I was visiting a new city. I asked a man for directions.
最近，我去了一座新城市。我向一个人问路。
When he spoke, his words came too quickly for me to understand.
他说话时语速太快，我听不懂。
I said, "Wow! He speaks quickly!"
然后我就感叹：“哇！他语速也太快了！”
In the sentence "he speaks quickly", "speak" is the verb, and "quickly" is the adverb. "Quickly" described "speak".
在“he speaks quickly”这个句子中，“speak”是动词，“quickly”是副词。“quickly”是用来修饰“speak”的。
In other words, "quickly" answers the "how" question.
换句话说，“quickly”回答了“how”这个问题。
How does this person speak?
这个人说话状况如何？
He speaks quickly.
他语速很快。
Let's take another example.
我们再举一个例子。
Imagine you are watching a turtle move.
想象你正在看一只乌龟移动。
How does the turtle move? Slowly.
海龟的移动是怎样的？缓慢。
So you could say, "the turtle moves slowly."
因此，你可以说，“乌龟移动得很慢。”
There are many other uses of adverbs, but for today, just remember that adverbs often have an "ly" ending and often modify a verb.
副词还有很多其他的用法，但是今天，只要记住副词通常以“ly”结尾，并且经常修饰动词就可以了。
