For me it really started very locally here in my office in San Francisco

As Dr. Chesney explained, I'm a family physician first and foremost

And that really is what grounds me and centers me in my work

As a matter of fact I had a resident here today

So she can attest to that and working with patients on an individual basis

And it was really in hearing those stories

And particularly hearing from patients who come from all over the world who're kind of telling me about a recurring theme

That was that when they would go back to their native village wherever it was, they would tend to get healthier

And then they come back to San Francisco, they feel worse again

And there's one patient, in particular, Angela, who I talked about in the book

who went back to her village in Brazil on the banks of the Amazon River

She was actually back there for three months

and in that time, really managed to take what was high blood sugars

and make them normal again and brought her blood pressure down and lost a bunch of weight

and started to reverse her a lot of the health problems that she had
她的很多健康问题一下子都好了很多
and then she came back to San Francisco and everything went bad for her again

And she was in my office trying to figure out why it was that she did so well in the Amazon and did so poorly here
