SpaceX has successfully launched its first deep space mission after the unmanned Falcon 9 rocket blasted off from Cape Canaveral in Florida, carrying a climate satellite.

It was the private space company's third try at launching the Deep Space Climate Observatory for NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Air Force.

The observatory, called DSCOVR, will provide advance warnings of incoming geomagnetic storms as well as views of the Earth.
