Dialogue 1

我们这个节目制作组的记者Geoff Howard想了解一家新开的超级市场的情况,问了三位顾客。
GEOFF:
What's the new supermarket like?
SHOPPER 1:
Big.
SHOPPER 2:
It's good.
SHOPPER 3:
Marvellous.It's cheep.It's very cheap.

Dialogue 2
Geoff又向另外三位顾客问了同样的问题。
GEOFF:
What's the new supermarket like?
SHOPPER 4:
It's large.
SHOPPER 5:
Spacious.
SHOPPER 6:
It's very modern.

Dialogue 3
Geoff和这家超级市场经理谈话。这段话在广播里分段播送。
GEOFF:
Alan,tell me more about the new supermarket.
MANAGER:
Well,it's bigger than the old one,of course.It's 3000 square metres.
GEOFF:
What about the old one?
MANAGER:
Oh,it was about 1500 square metres.This one's twice as big.
GEOFF:
Is it cheaper than the old one ?
MANAGER:
Oh,yes,it's cheaper and better.And it's more modern...and more convenient than the old one.
Geoff管经理叫Alan,这是经理的名字。不说姓,只说名字,这样叫比较随便。

PART III - The lesson
1. DESCRIBING THINGS 描述事物
我们请别人描述一个事物,提问时常常用like这个词.得到的回答往往是It's+形容词,或单用形容词.
What's the new supermarket/it like?
- It's big.
- Big.
也可以用下面这个句型请别人描述事物:
Tell me about the new supermarket.
如果想进一步了解情况,就说:
Tell me more about it.
2. DESCRIBING PEOPLE 描述事物
用like提问,请对方提供他人的情况,有两种问法:
a) What's John like?
(通常是指他的性格,但有时也可以指他的外表)
He's nice.(指性格)
He's slim.(指外表)
b) What does John LOOK like?(只指他的外表)
He's dark.
其他动词也可以套此句型:
What does it SOUND like?
What does it FEEL like?
What does it TASTE like?
3. COMPARING 比较
It's bigger than the old one.
It's cheaper than the old one.
It's more modern than the old one.
It's more convenient than the old one.
It's better than the old one.
twie as big as the old one.

以上所举各例只是比较等级的梗概。要知详细内容, 请参阅语法书。
The old one这里的one用来代替supermarket。 英语里经常用one代替上文提到过的名词。
The new supermarket is big.
The old one was small.
** better是good的比较级形式,其最高级形式是best。
注意: 's用作简略式时有两种情况:
She's nice. She's got fair hair.
('s=is) ('s =has)

广播中尚有下列内容:
1. 超级市场:大型商场,出售食品和其他物品.购物时顾客从货 架上挑选好要买的东西,然后在出口处交款.
2. Barbara和John:这两人互相谈了对方的特点,你听了以 后对他们会有进一步的了解.
3. High和tall的区别: tall用于人;high用于物.
4. Good在不同的上下文有不同的含意:
The supermarket's good.(我喜欢这家超级市场,这个 地方不错.)
The child's good. (这孩子表现好)
Good!I've finished!(我为此感到高兴.)
Have a good day.(希望对方痛痛快快地玩一天.)

我们的记者Geoff Howard访问两位住在大桥饭店附近的居民。饭店坐落在住宅区。饭店里有个乐队,到了晚上就演奏。有的居民喜欢这种音乐;有的居民感到讨厌。这段对话在广播里分三部分播放。
GEOFF:
We're talking about live music at the Bridge Hotel.
(问)Jean,what do you think of live music at the Bridge Hotel?
JEAN:
Well,in my opinion,it's the wrong place for live music.
GEOFF:
Why is that?
JEAN:
The hotel's in a residential area.
GEOFF:
Paul,how do you feel about this?
PAUL:
If you want my opinion,I think Jean Thomas is reacting too strongly.Many people in the area need somewhere to go.And they like the music at the Bridge Hotel.
GEOFF:
But rock'n roll's noisy,isn't it?
JEAN:
Right!
PAUL:
That's true,but the band stops at ten o'clock.
JEAN:
But it's very noisy till then.
GEOFF:
Well,thank you,Jean and Paul,for giving us your opinions.
JEAN & PAUL:
Thanks.
