In some countries, schools aim to provide a general education across a range of subjects, while in other countries, children focus on a narrow range of subjects related to a particualar career. For today's world, which system is more appropriate?

The importance of school education has been widely recognized throughtout the world. However, it raises concerns about what the functions schools should have. In some countries, schools only teach students pratical subjects and skills rather than other courses that have nothing to do with employment while in some other countries; students have more choices among a variety of subjects. From my perspective, the latter system is more to youngsters and sacrificing some of children's general subjects, such as music and sports, would be detrimental to their studies.

Undoubtedly, those who support the former behavior, to some extent, may largely ignore the essence of education. In fact, not only should schools teach students professional skills that will potentially help them in their future career lives, but they also have to be responsible for students' physical and mental health, these subjects such as music, sports, drama and dance are extremly significant to those who are creative in these fields but not intelligent to study academic courses. In other words, if some children were not given right to take courses, they would lose their confidence and what's worse, they would think of schools as a hell and give up study as a consequence. Another point is that these subjects can help adolescents learn how to work in teams and compete with others, and then they would be able to communicate with others more effectively, which is an important part of their personal development. Moreover, some subjects like sports can also benefit youngsters a lot as it can make them energetic enough to complete their work and study.

Admittedly, the argument is not groundless that the small amount of subjects aim to contribute to students' employments should take a dominant role in schooling. Specifically, the first reason is that youngsters are more of less lacking a sense of discipline. In this case, if they were given opportunities to choose these subjects, it would lead to an irresponsible situation. Another reason is that due to the fierce competition in the labor market, students without skills will be ruled out easily. Thus, these practical subjects will at least make students earn a living in the rapidly changing world. But overall, in my opinion, students should not be taught to meet the demand of market at the expense of their freedom to study.

To conclude, I personally believe that schools do need to keep diversity of subjects, which is better for students' development. In addtion, teachers should make some effort to help youths to make right choices by offering professional suggestions.
