第一组：by turns & in turn
1. by turns 意为轮流、交替。如：
We did the work by turns. 我们轮流做这项工作。
They laughed and cried by turns. 他们一时哭一时笑。
2. in turn 意为依次。如：
We will cross the bridge in turn. 我们将依次过桥。
They answered the teacher’s questions in turn. 他们依次回答老师的问题。

第二组：turn down & turn up
1. turn down 表示关小(收音机等的音量)，turn up 表示开大(收音机等的音量)，是一组反义词。如：
The TV is pretty loud. Can you turn it down a little? 电视机声音太大了，能关小一点吗?
I can’t hear the radio very well; could you turn it up a bit? 收音机我听不太清楚，你把它开大一点行吗?
2. turn down 还可表示拒不接受或采纳。如：
He asked her to marry him but she turned him down. 他叫她嫁给他，但她拒绝了他。
3. turn up 还可表示赴约、到达、出现、(被)找到、查阅等。如：
He turns up late for everything. 他干什么都迟到。
For some reason he didn’t turn up. 由于某种原因他没有来。
Turn up the dictionary if you can’t spell the word. 这个词如果不会拼，可以查字典。

第三组：turn in & turn into
1. turn in 意为上交、上床睡觉。如：
Turn in your homework, please. 请把家庭作业交上来。
We turned the thief to the police. 我们把小偷交给警察。
We turn in at nine and get up at six. 我们9点钟上床睡觉，6点钟起床。
2. turn into 意为(使)成为、翻译。如：
Water can turn [be turned into] ice. 水可以变成冰。
We must turn grief into strength. 我们必须化悲痛为力量。
Can you turn it into English? 你能把它译成英语吗?

第四组：turn off & turn on
turn off 表示关掉(收音机，电灯，水龙头等)，turn on 表示打开(收音机，电灯，水龙头等)。如：
Turn off the light before you go out. 出去时请关灯。
Please turn on the radio (the music, the water). 请把收音机(音乐，自来水)打开。
注：有时用作不及物动词。比较：
I can’t turn off the tap. 我无法把龙头关上。
The tap won’t turn off. 这龙头关不上。
