Chapter 2: Standards for a Younger Brother When Away from Home

第二节 出则悌

Older siblings should befriend the younger ones;

兄道友，

younger siblings should respect and love the older ones.

弟道恭，

Siblings who keep harmonious relationships among themselves are being dutiful to their parents.

兄弟睦，孝在中。

When siblings value their ties more than property and belongings,

财物轻，

no resentment will grow among them.

怨何生。

When siblings are careful with words and hold back hurtful comments,

言语忍，

feelings of anger naturally die out.

忿自泯。

Whether you are drinking, eating, walking, or sitting, let the elders go first;

或饮食，或坐走，长者先，

younger ones should follow.

幼者后。

When an elder is asking for someone,

长呼人，

get that person for him right away.

即代叫，

If you cannot find that person,

人不在，

immediately report back, and instead put yourself at the elder's service.

己即到。

When you address an elder,

称尊长，

do not call him by his given name. This is in accord with ancient Chinese etiquette.

勿呼名。

In front of an elder,

对尊长，

do not show off.

勿见能。

If you meet an elder you know on the street,

路遇长，

promptly clasp your hands and greet him with a bow.

疾趋揖，

If he does not speak to you,

长无言，

step back and respectfully stand aside.

退恭立。
