3.Seal n．海豹；印记，印章；封蜡，封铅；火漆 vt.盖章于；密封

【用】注意be worth doing这个短语含有被动的意味。
【派】worthless（adj.无价值的，无用的；卑鄙的，品行不端的）；worthwhile(adj.值得一试的，值得干的)
【辨】merit, value, virtue, worth
四个词都有“价值”的意思。merit指“值得赞扬的优点”；value特指重要性或价值；virtue强调美德或受益的长处、优点；worth着重人或物本质中的价值。

5.erode v．腐蚀，侵蚀，磨损

【记】词根记忆：e+rod(咬)+e一咬掉--腐蚀，侵蚀
【例】The sea erodes the rocks.
海水侵蚀岩石。
【派】erosion（n.侵蚀，腐蚀）

6.intend vt.想要，打算；意指

【记】联想记忆：in(使)+tend(趋向)一使成趋向一打算
【例】Tom rntended to report his managef to the police.
汤姆打算向警方检举他的经理。
【辨】intend, mean,design
三个词都有“打算”的意思。intend表示决心要做某事，比较正式；mean较口语化，表示“意味着”，并非决意成功，有时可与intend互换；design指精心设计、安排以达到某种目的。

7.quit v．停止，离去，放弃；偿清，回报

【记】本身为词根：使自由；免除
【例】The person who can’t afford the rent must quit.
付不起租金的人必须离开。

8.magic n.魔术，法术；魔力，魅力 adj.魔术的;不可思议的

【例】For the Egyptians，pictures still had magic power.
对埃及人来说，图画仍旧有种魔力。(1998)
