LESSON 42 The lost child

第四十二课 失踪的小孩

I.

第一节

It was a clear, cold, winter night,

那个冬天夜晚，晴朗而寒冷，

The heavens were brightly starred,

天空布满繁星，

When on St. Bernard's snowy height

在圣伯纳修道院

The good monks kept their guard.

僧侣们保持着警惕。

And round their hearth, that night, they told,to one, who shelter craved,

那晚在炉边，他们对一个借宿的人谈起，

How the brave dog, he thought so old,full forty lives had saved;

那条年迈而勇敢的狗如何挽救整整四十条生命；

When suddenly, with kindling eye,up sprang the old dog there,

突然，老犬眼睛放光，一跃而起，

As from afar a child's shrill cry,rang through the frosty air.

因为孩子的尖叫声透过寒冷的空气传到了他们的耳中。

In haste the monks unbarred the door,

僧侣们急忙打开门，

Rugs round the mastiffs threw;

在狗背上绑好毯子；

And as they bounded forth once more,

他们一边往前走一边说，

Called, "Blessings be with you!"

“上帝保佑！”

II.

第二节

They hurried headlong down the hill,

他们急忙跑下山，

Past many a snow-wreath wild,

穿过白雪皑皑的土地，

Until the older dog stood still

直跑到老狗静静站着的地方

Beside a sleeping child.

旁边一个孩子正在熟睡。

He licked the little icy hand,with his rough, kindly tongue;

它用粗糙的舌头慈爱地舔孩子冰冷的小手。

With his warm breath he gently fanned,the tresses fair and long.

伴着呼出的温暖气息，它用长毛给孩子取暖。

The child looked up, with eyes of blue,

孩子抬头看，眨着蓝色的眼睛，

As if the whole he guessed;

他看到的正如他想的那样；

His arms around the dog he threw,

它用手抱住狗，

And sunk again to rest.

再次睡去。

Once more he woke, and wrapped him fast,in the warm covering sent:

再次醒来时，他快速裹上了温暖的毯子：

The dogs then with their charge, at last,up the steep mountain went.

随后和狗一起上了山。

III.

第三节

The fire glowed bright with heaped-up logs,

柴火烧的很旺，

Each monk brought forth a light;

每个僧侣都取出一个火把

"Good dogs!" they cried, "good dogs, good dogs!

“好狗！”他们欢呼，“真实好狗！

Whom bring you here to-night?"

今晚是谁把你带到这来的？”

In with a joyous bound they come—

他们高兴地走了过来——

The boy awoke and smiled:

男孩醒来，微笑：

"Ah me!" the stranger cried, "some home mourneth for thee, fair child!"

“呀我！”这些陌生人欢呼，“孩子，今晚这就是你的家！”

With morning light the monks and boy sought where the village lay—

天亮后，僧侣们帮孩子找回家的路——

I dare not try to paint the joy

我不敢描述这种快乐

Their coming gave that day.

他们的到来才有了那一天。
