对话:

Susie: Hi, Coco, welcome you to the company. I hope you will enjoy your new job and be happy here.

Coco: Thanks. Susie. I’m sure I will have good time working here. I look forward to all the new challenges and opportunities, and also making new friends.

Susie: Good. As I told you in the interview that we have a pretty relaxed culture here in our company, but there are still some formal rules. First let me fill you in on some informal do’s and don’ts.

Coco: Please.

Coco:

Susie: We don’t need you to punch in and out here, but we hope every employee arrives on time and doesn’t leave early without asking for permission.

Coco: I see. When you have to punch a clock you feel that you are watched.

Coco:

Susie: And sure we don’t mind a normal number of personal phone calls, but we would like everyone not to have too many.

Susie:

Coco: I understand.

Coco:

Susie: And if you need to make personal long distance call, please tell the accounting department so they can bill you later.

Coco: Ok. Are there any subjects that are taboo to talk about?

Coco:

Susie: If there is one, salary is. It can sometimes cause trouble and interoffice rivalries and therefore hurts morale.

Coco: I see what you mean. It’s been a problem in almost every company I’ve worked.

Susie: Also, because there is a fine line between small talk and gossip, it’s a good idea not to talk about other people’s private lives.

Coco: Especially when people are not there to defend themselves.

Coco:

Susie: I agree. Speaking of private life, interoffice romance is not a good idea, either, even though it’s not officially frowned upon.

Coco: That sounds reasonable. I’ll do my best.

Coco:

(1)fill someone in on something

Eg: Our manager has filled everyone in on the new proposal in yesterday’s meeting.

(2)do’s and don’ts

Eg: In our company, one of the informal dos and don’ts is that you should silence your cell phone in office hours.

Eg: Nowadays, few companies have punching in and out system.

(4)interoffice rivalries

(5)hurts morale

(6)a fine line

Eg: There is a fine line between love and hate.

(7)small talk

(8)private lives 私生活

这里 lives 是 life 的复数形式,原形为 private life。private 指私人的、私立的,如 private detective(私人侦探)、private school(私立学校)等。

(9)speaking of 提到

Eg:Speak of angels, and you will hear their wings.

(10) interoffice romance
