As a group, "fenqing" are very diverse in their opinions. However, they are usually nationalistic and patriotic(爱国的), and very much concerned with political issues. Nowadays, with the development of Internet, "fenqing" has been devolved into a term used predominately as a Internet slang. And whether "fenqing" is derogatory(不敬的) or not usually depends on "fenqing" themselves. Generally, the "fenqing" take pride in their beliefs and passion, considering themselves patriotic.

In response, "fenqing" refer to their most vehement opponents as "hanjian" (traitor(s) of China) or "tewu" (spy/ spies).
