With the opening ceremony set to take place in just a few days' time, work at one of Rio de Janeiro's key venues is still incomplete, Daily Mail Online can reveal.

The Lagoa Stadium, which is hosting the rowing and canoeing competitions, remains partially shrouded in scaffolding while bags of garbage, orange cones and piles of dry leaves litter one of the entrances.

Closer to the main stands, workers could be seen hanging branding along one of the fences – with the overseer telling reporter that she cannot guarantee the job will be done in time for the opening ceremony on Friday night.

An overseer, who is part of the management in charge of 'the look of the Games', said problems with suppliers has made finishing off the stadium take longer than expected.

She said, however, that her team is working long hours and hope to finish by the end of the week.

The official, who declined to be named, said: 'It [the stadium] is not finished yet but the rowing will start on Saturday and we hope it will be finished by then.

She added: 'We hope and pray it will be ready by Friday but I can't say for sure. We are working very long hours to try and get it finished. We are here all the time.'

Although the exterior of the Lagoa Stadium, which sits on the banks of Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas and approximately 1.7 miles from the tourist hotspot of Copacabana, appears messy, the interior is thought to be complete.

'The inside is done,' a worker who preferred not to give his name told Daily Mail Online. 'It looks fine in there. It is nice.'

Rowing teams have already begun arriving in Rio ahead of Friday night's opening ceremony but Team GB rowing coach Rob Dauncey said he was confident that the stadium will be ready in time.

'We're pretty happy with how it looks – most of it seems to be ready,' he said. 'I know they've had some problems with water quality but down by the jetty, you can see clear down to the bottom.

'We have told the team not to get water in their mouths but we would do that with any lake. It should be fine.'

Although Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas has not been afflicted with the same concerns over water quality as other parts of the Olympic set-up, the lagoon appeared less than pristine on Monday with bits of garbage - including a plastic bag - seen floating in the depths.

Other bits of infrastructure, including the jetties and filming stands, appeared complete.

Security has also been ramped up around the perimeter of the lake and, when Daily Mail Online visited, it was being patrolled by a boat-load of armed soldiers while security personnel stood guard at each entrance.

While Daily Mail Online was unable to access the stands, it was possible to get within meters of the jetties via an unguarded park to the rear of the stadium.

Concerns over security, incomplete accommodation and filthy water in Ganabara Bay have blighted the run up to Rio 2016.

Last week, Australia's contingent of medal hopefuls were left furious after arriving in Rio only to discover that their building in the athletes' village was still unfinished. Team members reported holes in the ceiling, exposed wiring and incomplete fittings - and were forced to find alternative places to stay.

Meanwhile, the quality of the water in Ganabara Bay, which will host the triathlon, sailing and some swimming events, has raised eyebrows after mounds of floating garbage and a corpse were spotted over the weekend.

Viral levels in the bay are said to be 1.7million times over the limit of what would be considered worrying in Europe or the United States, while experts warned of sewage spills.

So dirty is the water, the 1,400 swimmers and sailors set to take to the water over the next three weeks have been warned not to open their mouths while competing for fear of becoming violently ill.

Concerns have also been raised over the viral load found in the water off Copacabana Beach, which will host the marathon swimming, and also in the sand itself.

Adenovirus, which poses a particular risk to infants and young children, has also been found in the sand of popular tourist destination Ipanema Beach.
