Lesson 86 Out of control失控

As the man tried to swing the speedboat round, the steering wheel came away in his hands. He waved desperately to his companion, who had been water skiing for the last fifteen minutes. Both men had hardly had time to realize what was happening when they were thrown violently into the sea. The speedboat had struck a buoy, but it continued to move very quickly across the water. Both men had just begun to swim towards the shore, when they noticed with dismay that the speedboat was moving in a circle. It now came straight towards them at tremendous speed. In less than a minute, it roared past them only a few feet away. After it had passed, they swam on as quickly as they could because they knew that the boat would soon return. They had just had enough time to swim out of danger when the boat again completed a circle. On this occasion, however, it had slowed down considerably. The petrol had nearly all been used up. Before long, the noise dropped completely and the boat began to drift gently across the water.

1.Both men had hardly had time to realize what was happening when they were thrown violently into the sea.

hardly,barely

I couldn't hardly see him 和 I didn't get none I hardly saw him at all 或 I never saw him at all , 但并不是I occasionally saw him at all; 我们说I hardly had any time 或 I didn't have any time 但不是I had any time 等。 Hardly had I arrived when she left, 和 Never have I read such a book 或 At no time has he condemned the movement. Occasionally has he addressed this question 或 To a slight degree have they changed their position 。

hardly 主要与any,ever,at all或动词can连用:

He has hadly any money.

I hardly ever go out.

It hadly rained at all last summer.

Her case is so heavy that she can hadly lift it.

I hardly know him.

2.They had just had enough time to swim out of danger when the boat again completed a circle.

out of danger脱离危险

The patient is out of danger.

3.On this occasion, however, it had slowed down considerably.

Business slows down in summer.

The increase of productions has now slowed down.

4.The petrol had nearly all been used up.

By this time he had used up all his savings.
