UNICEF estimates that globally some 230 million children live in countries affected by armed conflict. Fifteen million of them live in regions of major conflicts, like Central African Republic, where tit-for-tat sectarian violence displaced one fifth of the population. The 50-day war in the Palestinian Gaza Strip left more than 500 children dead and more than 3,000 injured. Not even the schools -- often used for shelter -- were spared.

Cigar rollers in Havana thrilled with warming U.S.-Cuba policy
雪茄卷烟商为美国古巴关系回暖感到激动

It's a formerly 'forbidden fruit' sure to be enjoyed by cigar aficionados on both sides of the Florida Straits. On the list of President Barack Obama's new Cuba policy are legalized Cuban cigars, regarded as some of the finest in the world. New provisions that may soon be implemented would make it legal to return to the United States with up to $100 of alcohol and tobacco. Milagros Diaz says Americans have been lining up at her Havana cigar shop, and they'll only get the finest.

Race to save Jakarta from the sea
雅加达逐渐沉没 印尼展开拯救行动

*eo^Hs0L6W&&

Indonesia's capital city is sinking. Jakarta sits on a swampy plain and has sunk four metres in the past three decades. Water drained through wells to supply the city is causing the ground on which it lies to subside. Today 40 per cent of the city is below sea level. The government launched a 263 million dollar scheme in October to build a giant sea wall around the city. The hope is that the wall will stop the sea water overwhelming the city as it sinks further still. The World Bank which oversees a huge flood mitigation project in Jakarta which it largely funds says the problems are acute. (SOUNDBITE) (English) FOOK CHUAN ENG, WORLD BANK'S SENIOR WATER AND SANITATION EXPERT, SAYING: "If you compare this against the other major cities in this region - Manila, Bangkok or Ho Chi Minh City - they also suffer from land subsidence but the rates that we have seen in Jakarta is actually above those other cities." Jakarta's new sea wall will include a 24-kilometre outer wall.

It'll have 17 artificial islands up to eight kilometres off shore Officials with the Dutch engineering and consulting firm brought in to help say it's a massive undertaking. (SOUNDBITE) (English) VICTOR COENEN, CHIEF REPRESENTATIVE OF DUTCH CONSULTING FIRM WITTEVEN + BOS, SAYING:

HleDZ)Uiw,hn

"It will be built in 16 to 20 metres of deep water and basically we're going to build a totally new city on top of that." The sea wall project is a race against time and not just for Jakarta. Southeast Asia is suffering from increasing numbers of severe floods and storms. Between 1960 and 1969 there were fewer than 20 such incidents. Between 2000 and 2008 there were almost six times as many.

To mark the 15th anniversary of Macao's return to China, Macao has held the biggest fireworks display in its history.

lMA&.sTFkNy8!~+b@

The spectacular show symbolized the key stages in Macao's past, present and future.

The show was also environmentally-friendly, using sulphur-free fireworks, like those used in the APEC fireworks display earlier this month in Beijing.

One of the other highlights was an aquatic multimedia light show, which projected a map of China on the water's surface. The show ended with a 15-volley salute representing the 15 years of Macao's return to China.
