U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry meets with Afghan President Hamid Karzai in Kabul Friday in an effort to advance negotiations over a security pact that have stalled. The US wants a deal done by the end of the month. Karzai says it can wait until after presidential elections in April. The deal will determine the presence of U.S. forces in Afghanistan after most are withdrawn in 2014. Failure to reach an agreement could prompt Washington to pull out all of its forces at the end of 2014, an outcome known as the "zero option". On the ground Brigadier General Heinz Feldmann says there are some encouraging signs.

The ruling party's anniversary is one of the most celebrated holidays in North Korea along with the birthdays of the late leaders. North Korea's first couple also received a standing ovation as they took in a women's volleyball match and a Korean-style wrestling match. The celebrations comes as the mother of jailed U.S. missionary Kenneth Bae arrived in North Korea and was able to visit her ailing son. He was detained last November as he led a tour group through the northern region of the country. His mother says his condition is ok and that she plans to spend a few days in the country.

A car bomb has exploded outside the Swedish consulate in Benghazi, putting security officials on high alert. The explosion blew out the building's front, leaving debris everywhere. No casualties were immediately reported and the Swedish foreign ministry said it had no information about the incident. Nobody claimed responsibility for the attack, which happened a day after a group of former rebels kidnapped the prime minister. The attack also happened days after U.S. special forces captured a Libyan al Qaeda suspect in Tripoli, outraging Islamist militants, who called for revenge attacks. Libya has been in a state of turmoil for two years following the fall of Col. Muammar Gaddafi.

Firefighters have put out a fire that started in a shopping mall in west Beijing.
No casualty has been reported. The fire began close to 3 am Beijing Time in the Shijingshan district. It spread across some 15-hundred square meters, and neighboring roads were also affected. The cause of the fire and the extent of property damage are still under investigation.
