Dialogue 1

NEWSREADER: A big search is under way in the mountains near Cradle Mountain where seven schoolboys are overdue on a one-day hike. About twenty police and volunteers are now combing the area, and a helicopter is expected to join the search later today. At this stage no fears are held for the safety of the group.

Dialogue 2

BILL: Did you find out what's happening?
SUE: Yes. Apparently the area is difficult to search. He told me it was raining heavily. And he said the bush was very thick. He said there were lots of caves up there.
BILL: Oh?
SUE: Yes. He said the kids might be sheltering in a cave.
BILL: So they don't know where they are?

REPORTED SPEECH (Ⅰ)
The announcer said: "The boys ARE lost."
The announcer said the boys WERE lost.
HOW TO MAKE AN INDIRECT STATEMENT
He/She/They Said...
He/She/They told me/us...
The announcer said (that) the boys were lost.
is→was
are→were
may→might
can→could
will→would
won't→wouldn't
例如:
He said, "They may be sheltering in a cave."
He said (that) they might be sheltering in a cave.
He said, "We'll use a helicopter."('ll = will)
He said (that) they'd use a helicopter('d = would)
He said, "We can get one straightaway."
He told me (that) they could get one straightaway.

CONVERSATIONAL DEVICES

Apparently

Apparently the area is difficult to search.
Apparently the area is difficult to search.
The area is difficult to search, apparently.
PRONUNCIATION CORNER
a)以辅音结尾的词与下面以元音开始的词连读,如:come in,a lot of 。
b)以[i:]、[ai]、[ei]、[ɔi]结尾的词与下面以元音开始的词之间用微弱的类似[j-]的音连读,例如:the East,my aunt,they are,employ。
c)以[u:]、[əu]、[au]结尾的词与下面以元音开始的词之间用微弱的类似[w-]的音连读,例如:go eat, go away, now and then。
d)以字母r结尾的词与下面以元膏开始的词之间用[r]连读,如:their aunt,our own, her uncle。
The area is difficult to Search.

Example: She said, "We'll do our best to find I the boys."(She told him...)
Answer: She told him they'd do their best to find the boys.
1. He said, "Seven schoolboys are overdue on a one-day hike." (He told us…)
2. She said, "They aren't carrying any food." (She said...)
3. He said, "A helicopter is going to join the search." (He told them...)
4. He said, "The .area may be difficult to search." (He told them....)
5. He said, "You can ring the police." (He told her...)
6. The policeman said, "We'll find the boys soon." (The policeman told her...)
