Message from Ms. Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, on the Occasion of World Day of Romani Language

World Day of Romani Language is an opportunity to promote the preservation and dissemination of the main channel of communication of Roma culture.
世界罗姆语日是鼓励保护和宣传罗姆文化主要传播媒介的契机。
The Romani language – Romani ?hib – is the official language of Roma people the world over, enriched by a long history of migration and a wide and varied range of influences. It is also, however, a particularly fragile language. Because language is perhaps the primary element constituting a culture, that vulnerability threatens to affect Roma culture itself, thereby endangering a unique heritage that is the repository of a vast amount of knowledge.
罗姆语承载着罗姆人的移徙传统，历史悠久，影响深远，是全世界罗姆人的正式语言。它同时也是一门尤为脆弱的语言。由于语言是构成某种特定文化的第一要素，这种脆弱性或将累及罗姆文化本身，让这份蕴含了丰富知识的独特遗产岌岌可危。
This is why UNESCO is calling for further support for the Romani language, part of what constitutes the Roma identity, by strengthening in particular its teaching, especially for children for whom it is the mother tongue. Recognition of the importance of the Romani language must be part of broader efforts to support Romani people, their fundamental rights and social inclusion. UNESCO is working to create conditions conducive to ensuring that the Romani language remains alive, that it is spoken and taught, and to develop a social and political environment that will enable the construction of societies committed to the preservation of multilingualism and respect for minority languages, so that their use is an asset, not a handicap. In so doing, UNESCO aims to contribute to combating discrimination and promote inclusive societies, respectful of their cultural and linguistic diversity.
正因如此，教科文组织呼吁通过加强罗姆语教学，特别是针对母语为罗姆语的儿童的教学，加大对这一罗姆人身份构成元素的支持力度。在支持罗姆人、促进其基本权利和社会融入的广泛努力中，必须包括对罗姆语重要性的承认。为促进罗姆语的使用及教学，教科文组织致力于为这门语言的发展创造有利条件，营造社会及政治环境，创建重视多语使用、尊重少数族群语言的社会，让使用这类语言成为一项优势，而非一项劣势。教科文组织旨在通过此举，为防止歧视、建设具有包容性且尊重文化和语言多样性的社会作出贡献。
On this World Day of Romani Language, we celebrate, with all of the Roma people, a culture that contributes to the wealth of humankind. Through it, we are endeavouring to contribute to the protection of all languages and cultures throughout the world.
值此世界罗姆语日之际，让我们与全体罗姆人一道，颂扬这一使世界更为丰富多彩的文化。我们希望借此为保护全世界所有语言和文化作出贡献。
