The celebration of Nelson MandelaInternational Day is particularly significant this year. Just months after thedeath of this icon of freedom, whose legacy was hailed by the whole world, wecan gauge the indelible mark that he has left on history and the enduringrelevance of his message.

Nelson Mandela changed much more than thefate of his own country. By struggling for freedom and dignity, he contributedto the advancement of human rights and universal recognition of the equality ofall men and women. A political prisoner who became president, he chose thedifficult path of dialogue, appeasement and mutual understanding, in order toput an end to the worst form of segregation and lead his country toreconciliation.

His impressive statement from the dock at the RivoniaTrial, included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register, remains one of thestrongest expressions of the universal aspiration to “a democratic and freesociety”?

This message stands at the heart of themission of UNESCO, for which Nelson Mandela was a Goodwill Ambassador andwinner of the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize. In increasingly diverse andinterconnected societies, the dialogue of cultures and respect for rights aremore important than ever in building lasting peace. Tolerance can be built fromhuman rights education and from knowledge of the history and memories ofpeoples, thanks to which minds re opened for mutual understanding and toprevent new forms of discrimination. The ancestral wisdom of ubuntu is in factthe wisdom of our globalized world: we can only be fully ourselves when werespect others.

“It’s yourturn now”, said Mandela at the end of his life, and the best way to honour hismemory is, indeed, to continue ceaselessly, each of us in our own way, toensure that his values are reflected in today’s societies.
