Good evening, it is a great honour and privilege for me to stand before you and to warmly welcome you to the Opening Ceremony of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games.

Tonight, we witness the birth of the Youth Olympic Games and share with the world this historic moment. Tonight, we welcome 3,600 Young Olympians to Singapore; and over the next 12 days we will witness these outstanding talents from the 204 National Olympic Committees compete in 26 Olympic sports.

The Young Olympians will compete against each other in sports and they will also come together to take part in the Culture and Education Programme as friends and partners. The IOC has envisaged the Culture and Education Programme as a defining element of the Youth Olympic Games, differentiating it from other Games.

Through the programme, the Young Olympians will take part in activities and discussions on global and social issues as well as learn how they can make a positive impact in their community. Most importantly, we hope that they will build strong and abiding bonds of friendship, and learn that the power of sports and the ideals of the Olympic values can help us build a more united and peaceful world.

President Rogge and my dear IOC colleagues, thank you for your vision and for your gift to the youth of the world. Thank you for these Games that will change lives and imbue the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect. Thank you for entrusting this exciting challenge to Singapore.

My friends and colleagues at the International Federations and National Olympic Committees, thank you for your close collaboration. Together with the IOC, we have co-constructed this very first Youth Olympic Games in these short and eventful two and a half years. We could not have done it without you.

On behalf of the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee, I will like to thank our Prime Minister Mr Lee Hsien Loong and the Government of Singapore for the wholehearted support they have given to these Games.

To my fellow citizens, thank you for the concerted effort from the whole of Singapore. More than 20,000 have volunteered their services directly to the Games, and many thousands more have offered their support in many other ways. I call upon all Singaporeans to be gracious hosts and to create a meaningful and memorable experience for our all guests.

Friends from all over the world, just 5 days ago on August 9th, Singapore celebrated the 45th Anniversary of her Independence. In the course of our history, we have come through many trials and tribulations, growing from a small fishing village 200 years ago to the Singapore of today. We are proud of our country and what we have achieved together. There are so many things to do, to see and to explore in Singapore. To our overseas guests I wish you a pleasant and memorable stay.

Thank you all for joining us in this exciting journey. Let us celebrate and enjoy the Youth Olympic Games and live the Olympic Values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect.

Thank you. Merci beaucoup.

Now, I have the honour to invite Mr Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee, to deliver his address. Mr President, please.
