3. What is your insight into earthquakes? How much do you know about other natural disasters?

Candidate 1: Whenever I recall the earthquake that befell(降临到) Sichuan Province I would be in a sad mood. Now I often wonder if I can have the slightest idea of the coming earthquake. In my eyes, when the water is boiling in a well, the animals get irritable(暴躁的,易怒的), and clouds indicating earthquakes appear in the sky, I'll predict the earthquake will come.

When we refer to disasters, floods will come to my mind. We experienced the flood in 1998, and floods come each year. Though it's difficult to forecast the flood, I know how to avoid it. Nowadays, people begin to realize the importance of plants, however, trees and grasses were destoryed in the past years. As a result, when it rained, nothing could prevent the soil erosion and floods occurred. So if we want to avoid the flood we should begin with the protection of the plants.

Candidate 2: Earthquake is a natural disaster. When an earthquake occurs, the most obvious features are the shaking of ground, the collapse of houses and the deformation(变形) of roads. About five months ago, China suffered a lot from a severe earthquake which befell on Sichuan Province. And more than eighty thousand people were killed. The earthquake brought us so much sadness. From this earthquake I realize that the nature cannot be conquered, and what we should do is to prepare for that all the time. Other natural disasters I know include mudflow, flood, tornado, hurricane, typhoon, hail, drought, snowstorm, wildfire, tsunami and so on. Floods may wipe out everything. Tornadoes, hurricanes and typhoons, which occur regularly in some areas, are also disastrous. Hallstorms can ruin harvests. Droughts often cause famine. Snowstorms can block streets, roads and even make the communication break down. Wildfires may destroy a large
area of forests, which brings an enormous loss.

Candidate 3: Earthquake is a horrible thing, to be honest. It is just like a tragedy which lasts for a few seconds but ends terribly. Varieties of buildings and shelters are damaged so quichly. The other natural disasters may include tsunami, typhoon, volcanic eruption and so on.

If the earth loses its balance, I'm afraid that it may crash. That is to say, the former whole board may be divided into many pieces. During this period, rivers may change their directions while new hills may appear. Brand-new appearance of the local area may change beyond our imagination. When we unfortunately encounter an earthquake, we should, first of all, try to hide in stable space. Scientists report that earthquakes do little harm to people, but buildings. So find a safe, small and stable space to hide while you are in buildings. God bless you.
