It seemed like there were quarrels every evening. My children were always fighting over something. They never agreed on who had last washed the dishes, or who had last picked the, TV program. I was tired of constantly being a judge.
One day, I thought over what my life was like before marriage. I recalled my high school days when the terms"Odd(奇数的)"day/and"Even"day meant something. My class schedule changed by turns between "O" days and"E"days. On O days I might attend Physics and Maths. And on E days I'd go to another elective class, such as First aid or Art.
So I explained our new system to the children. "Jolee, you were born first, "I said. "Is one an odd number or all even one?"
"It's odd, Mom. "
"And A1, you arrived second. Is two odd or even?"
"It's even, Mom. "
"Ok, so Jolee, from now on, every odd day is automatically your own special day. That means you get to pick what to watch, or which board game to play. Al, the same applies to you on even days. "
He thought about it a minute, then said, "But there are more odd days than even ones in some months. Jolee will get‘her day'two times in a row when a month ends in 31, and the next one begins with a one. "
"True, " I said, "but that also means she'11 be taking the smelly, disgusting rubbish out, washing the dishes, and doing other less-enjoyable things two more days in a row, and you won't. It's part of life's give-and-take. "
For the first few days after that, whenever one kid shouted, "Mom!"I'd just call out, "Whose day is it?"That settled it. Soon. the quarrelling ended.

Peyton, an 11-year-old boy from Florida, has the enthusiasm of scientific invention and the-gift of Thomas Edison.
The sixth-grader put his math and science skills as well as some real-life experience to use and created something that could benefit our world a lot — the sandless sandbag. Today he was named the winner of the Young Scientist Challenge for his sandbag.
"I had a really terrifying experience with a hurricane, " said Peyton. "When I was 4, I experienced Hurricane Wilma. When it hit Florida in October 2005, my family and I crowded in a closet and watched the storm bring damage and death to our area, feeling terrible and hopeless. "
Saltwater flooding caused great damage, which made him think about how people can prepare for floods. Peyton, who has been solving math problems since he was 3, eventually came up with the sandless sandbag.
"Instead of filling it with sand, I filled it with just the right amount of chemicals and salt, "he said. "What's amazing is that when you pick these bags up and they're not wet, they only weigh a pound or two. "
Unlike regular sandbags, Peyton's is light and easy to carry. They only expand when doused (浸泡)with water. The bags are portable when dry and will not float away when wet.
Experts praised his invention and said that the sandless sandbag could someday save a lot of lives and possessions. "He understands the big picture. He thinks in terms of the influence on society and safety for the people around this area, "said Dr. Antonio, the engineering chairman at the University of Miami. Elephants are the only species on the earth known to have death ritual(仪式)besides man.
They show a strong interest in the bones of their own kind. They are often seen gently touching the bones with their trunks and feet while remaining very quiet. Sometimes elephants completely unrelated to the dead will still visit their graves.
Elephant researcher Meredith recalls something in his book about a typical elephant death ritual. The entire family of a dead elephant, including her young baby, were all gently touching her body with their trunks, trying to lift her. The elephant herd were all rumbling(低吼):The baby elephant was even observed to be weeping and made sounds that sounded like a scream, but then the entire herd fell incredibly silent. Then they began to throw leaves and dirt over the body and broke off tree branches to cover her. They spent the next two days quietly standing over her body. They sometimes had to leave to get water or food, but they would always return.
Events of elephants behaving this way around human beings are common throughout Africa. On many occasions, they have buried dead or sleeping humans or helped them when they are hurt. An old woman fell asleep under a tree. When she woke up, there was an elephant standing over her, gently touching her. She kept very still because she was frightened. As other elephants arrived, they began to scream loudly and buried her under branches. She was found the next morning by the local people, unharmed.
George Adamson also recalls when he shot all elephant from a herd that kept breaking into the farmers'gardens. George gave the:elephant's meat to 1ocal men and then dragged the rest of the body miles away. That night, the other elephants found the body, took the leg bones, returned them to the exact spot the elephant was killed, and made the death ritual.

A four-wheeled robot, known as Rover, has been tested by a team at Sydney University. It was used to move a herd of cows from a field to a dairy(牛奶场).
Researchers were amazed at how easily cows accepted the presence of the robot. They were not disturbed by it and the gathering process was calm and effective. Because the robot moved in a steady manner it allowed cows to move at their own speed, which was important in reducing injuries among cattle, said Dr Kendra Kerrisk, dairy researcher and associate professor.
The robot was adapted from one that was already being used to monitor fruit and trees on farms. A team at Sydney University's Centre for Field Robotics improved the robot so that it could be put in a field with cows in order for the researchers to gather data on robot—cow interaction.
The robot needs to be operated by a human but it's hoped that in the future a version can be developed that will be fully automated. As well as gathering cows a new version could also collect information useful for farmers.
Using robots to get cows to the dairy will be better for their well-being. "The research is in its very early stages but robotic technologies certainly have the potential to transform dairy farming, "said Dr. Kerrisk. "When we have discussed this concept with farmers they have been extremely excited and we have had a series of calls and emails asking how they can get hold of one, "she added.
The robot could also cut down the number of accidents involving humans on farms. Most dairy farmers in Australia use bikes to round up their cattle and they are one of the leading causes of injury. The team hopes that by using the robot to do the job instead, accident rates could fall.
61. The robot Rover was mainly used to _____________.
A. milk the cows on the field B. feed the cows with food
C. round up cows on dairy farms D. take farmers around the farm
62. Why did the cows, accept the robot easily?
A. Because it moved at a steady pace.
B. Because it didn't hurt the cattle.
C. Because it was calm and kind.

63. At present, the robot Rover ______________.
A. can go around the farm automatically
B. can help researchers to gather data
C. has to be operated by a human
D. has been available in the market

A. The research will soon be finished.
B. The robot will be popular among farmers.
C. Robotic technology has highly developed.
D. Dairy farming has much potential.
65. What's the main idea of the text?
A. A team at Sydney University developed a robot.
