1.spread v．展开，摊开；涂敷；（使）传布，（使）散开；伸展，扩展 n.范围，广度；传播，蔓延；涂抹于面包上的食品
【例】The students spread it to their friends, and the new sport quickly caught on.
学生们把它传播给自己的朋友，这种新运动便很快流行起来了。(1997)
The bird spread its wings and flied away.
鸟儿展翅飞走了。
Spread butter on bread，it'll be more delicious.
将黄油涂在面包上会更好吃。

2.nominal adj.名义上的；极小的，微薄的；名词（性）的
【记】词根记忆：nomin(名称)+al--名义上的
【例】The man was commissioned nominal chairman of the organization.
这个人被委任为该组织的名誉主席。

3.recommend v．推荐，介绍；劝告，建议
【记】联想记忆：re(再一次)+com(共同)+mend（修改）--再次召集大家修改-建议
【例】I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in chemistry.
我把这本书推荐给对化学感兴趣的人。
Doctors recommend children not to eat too many sweets.
医生建议儿童不要吃太多的糖果。
【用】recommend后面接that从句时，要用“should+动词原形”，其中should可以省略。

4.overwhelm vt．战胜，压倒，克服：（指感情）压倒，控制
【记】组合词：over(在…上)+whelm(淹没，压倒)--压倒
【例】We are all overwhelmed by the feeling of homesickness.
我们都沉浸在思乡的情绪中。
【派】overwhelming( adj.压倒一切的，无法抗拒的)

5.inherent adj.固有的，内在的，天生的
【记】词根记忆：in(使)+her(黏附)+ent--生来就带着--固有的，内在的
【例】Personality is to a large extent inherent.
个性在很大程度上是先天形成的。

6.adapt V．适应，适合：改编，改写
【记】联想记忆：ad(表加强)+apt(适当的)--适应
【例】Animals that could not adapt themselves to the changed environment perished and those that could survived.
那些不能适应环境变化的动物都灭亡了，而能适应的则生存了下来。(1997)
【用】adapt常与介词to连用，表示“适应…”；而作“改编，改写”讲时，常与for或from连用。
【派】adaptable( adj.能适应新环境的；可改变的)；adaptation(n.改编；适应；改编本)；adapter/adaptor(n.适配器；转接器；改编者)

7.beg V．请求，恳求；乞讨，乞求
【例】Action must be taken to protect children being used to beg in Belfast，the Children's Commissioner says.
儿童事务专员表示，必须采取行动保护贝尔法斯特儿童，以防他们成为行乞的工具。
【用】“I beg your pardon.”常在口语中用到，是“对不起，请原谅；请再说一遍”的意思。
【派】beggar(n.乞丐，穷人)

8.precede v．先于…，位于...之前
【记】词根记忆：pre(前)+ced(走)+e--走在…之前--先于…
【例】Some rare phenomena may precede the occurrence of the earthquake.
地震发生之前会出现一些罕见的现象。
