After years of delays on Monday, Russia said it would deliver an S-300 anti-missile system to Syria within two weeks. Earlier promises to deliver the system did not materialize amid strong opposition from Israel and the United States. Russia also says it is providing radar blocking equipment and imposing a no-fly zone for Israeli aircraft. Despite the announcement Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says his country will continue attacks on Syria territory against what Israel claims are Iranian military positions.
We will continue to take action to prevent the establishment of an Iranian military presence in Syria. And we will continue security coordination with the Russian military. I agreed with President Putin that the IDF and the Russian military working teams would meet in the near future for this purpose.
Voicing its opposition to the move the United States said providing the s-300 system to Syria is a major mistake. Russia says it's a response to the damming of a Russian military jet in Syria last week that killed off 15 servicemen on board. Moscow has accused Israel of deliberately creating the conditions that caused the incident.
