The first public hearing for the banking royal commission is underway in Melbourne with home loans under the microscope. Counsel assisting the inquiry Rowena Orr QC has told the inquiry that the corporate watchdog has already moved to ban and suspend people and companies who commit fraud.
The federal government says Labor is planning to steal from pensioners by proposing to scrap cash refunds for some shareholders. Companies that have already paid tax give a franking credit to their shareholders so their dividends are not taxed. Labor says cancelling the concession will save five billion dollars a year but the treasurer Scott Morrison says the plan amounts to theft.
The British prime minister Theresa May says it is highly likely Russia is behind the nerve-agent attack on a former Russian double agent and his daughter. The British government had promised a robust response if Russia was found responsible for the poisoning of the pair. Russian officials have hit back describing the ultimatum as a "circus show".
And French fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy has died at the age of 91. Mr Givenchy created famous looks for Jackie Kennedy, Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn, including the iconic "little back dress" from Breakfast at Tiffany's.
