South Korea is preparing to return the remains of 36 Chinese soldiers killed during the Korean War. A rite was held to put the remains in coffins on Monday in the city of Paju.

Chinese military officers were present. The remains, unearthed last year, will be handed over to China on Thursday. South Korea has returned more than 500 sets of remains to China over the past two years.
The Chinese People's Volunteers fought side by side with the army of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the Korean War against the South Korean army and U.S.-led UN forces. Tens of thousands of Chinese soldiers died during the war, which ended in an armistice in 1953.
