Fudan University in Shanghai is to investigate allegations of plagiarism over a promotional video, saying it will be held accountable based on the result.
The university released a statement and apologized for the occurrence, saying it has had a negative impact on society as it damaged Fudan's reputation and hurt people's feelings.
The four-minute video entitled "To My Light" was produced by the university to mark its 110th anniversary. Featuring science fiction elements and personal accounts, it was released on the university's website and on other social media platforms on the Internet.
The video was later accused by Internet users of plagiarizing a publicity video titled "Explorer", a product of the University of Tokyo last year.
"To My Light" was then replaced with another video, but parts of it have also been accused by web users again of plagiarizing ideas used in a promotional video produced by a German university.
Education experts say the case shows that Chinese universities lack crisis management skills. People's disappointment over Fudan is not only about plagiarism, but also over the way in which it handles crisis.

Chinese astronauts are eager to join space flights with their foreign counterparts.
Nie Haisheng, the crew commander of the Shenzhou-10 manned space mission in 2013, said China's space station will welcome foreign astronauts.
Nie said he looks forward to the opportunity to go to the International Space Station.
The Shenzhou-10 mission lasted 15 days and remains the longest space operation by Chinese astronauts.
The International Space Station is a joint endeavor by the United States, Russia, Canada, Japan and the European Space Agency. According to a US law introduced in 2011, China is barred from participating in the program, even though its space officials have repeatedly expressed an interest in it.
The focus of China's space effort is on launching Tiangong-2, the country's second experimental space lab, and preparatory work for the future space station.
China started its manned space program in 1992 and has launched a space lab and 10 spacecraft, five of them being manned missions.
China is open to cooperation with other nations in its space station project.
