The movie Hidden Figures is based on true stories. It tells the story of three brilliant African-American women, Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson, working at NASA.

They served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of an astronaut into orbit and guaranteeing his safe return.

She works as a computer at NASA. But the majority there are white men, and they do not respect her at all, just like other white people in the society.

When Johnson asks Katherine what she does at NASA, Katherine says, "we calculate the mathematics necessary to enable launch and landing for the space program."

But Johnson is shocked. He says, "That's pretty heady stuff. They let women handle that sort of.."

Hearing this, Katherine gets angry, and replies: I will have you know I was the first Negro female student at West Virginia University Graduate School. On any given day, I analyze the manometer levels for air displacement, friction, and velocity, and compute over ten thousand calculations by cosine, square root, and lately, Analytic Geometry, by hand.

There are twenty bright, highly capable Negro women in the West Computing Group, and we're proud to be doing our part for the country. So, yes, they let women do some things at NASA, Mr. Johnson, and it's not because we wear skirts. It's because we wear glasses.

She is also the first woman to attend the briefings at NASA.

Her evil colleague Paul Stafford tells her that, "There is no protocol for women attending a briefing."

There's no protocol for a man circling the Earth either, sir.

In the movie, Mary Jackson is another African American woman who has superb mathematic skills, and dreams to be an engineer.

But it seems impossible for a black woman to be an engineer at NASA at that time. Mary says, "every time we have a chance to get ahead, they move the finish line."

She says to the judge at the court:

Before Alan Shepard sat on top of a rocket, no other American had ever touched space. And now, he will forever be remembered as the US Navy man from New Hampshire, the first to touch the stars. And I, sir, I plan on being an engineer at NASA, but I can't do that without taking classes at that all-white high school, and I can't change the color of my skin. So I have no choice but to be the first.

--I have no choice but to be the first.

They are fighting so hard to earn the respect from men.

So, going back to the question, what is feminism?

According to wikipedia, feminism is a range of social movements, political movements, and ideologies that aim to define, establish, and achieve the political, economic, personal, and social equality of the sexes.

So quite simply, feminism is about all genders having equal rights and opportunities, but not about commanding women or men to do certain things. Do you agree? Share your opinions with us.
