This is Everyday Grammar. I'm Kaveh.
欢迎收看《每日语法》栏目,我是卡维。
And I'm Lucija. Here is a letter we got from a grammar fan:
我是露西佳。我手中拿着一封语法栏目的粉丝寄过来的信,信的内容如下:
Dear Everyday Grammar,
亲爱的《每日语法》栏目组:
You should talk more about modals.
你们应该多讲讲情态动词。
You ought to know that certain modals are difficult for English learners to understand.
你们应该知道对于英语学习者来说,某些情态动词很难理解。
So unless you want to lose a grammar fan, you had better start teaching more about modals.
你们最好着手教授更多关于情态动词的知识,除非你们想失去一名粉丝。
Wow! That was a strongly worded letter.
哇哦!这封信措辞很激烈,
But the fan did bring up some important modals: SHOULD, OUGHT TO, HAD BETTER.
但是这名粉丝确实在心中提到了一些很重要的情态动词:should/ought to/had better。
Using the letter as an example: "SHOULD" was used to give a suggestion or friendly advice.
下面我们用这封信作为一个例子来讲讲情态动词。使用should来表示给出建议或友好的意见,例如:
You should talk more about modals.
你们应该多讲讲情态动词。
OUGHT TO is for giving advice. It has a similar meaning to "should" but it's not used as often.
ought to是给予意见的意思,它的意思和should接近但不常用。
You ought to know that certain modals are difficult for English learners to understand.
你应该知道部分情态动词很难让英语学习者理解。

OUGHT TO does not have a question or past tense form in everyday American English.
美式英语中,ought to不能用在问句中,也没有过去式。
HAD BETTER is stronger than "should" or "ought to."
had better的语气比should/ought to都强,
It really means "You should…or else.""HAD BETTER" suggests that something bad will happen if you don't follow the advice.
它的意思真的就是“你应该……否则……”;had better表示如果你不听从劝告就会发生不好的事儿;
In other words, it's a threat.
换言之,这是威胁。
…unless you want to lose a grammar fan, you had better start teaching more about modals.
除非你们想失去一位粉丝,否则你们最好着手教授更多关于情态动词的知识。
Yes, that does sound a bit harsh, but "HAD BETTER" is not always impolite.
是的,是有一点严厉,但是had better并非总是带有不礼貌的意味,
It can express a sense of urgency. For example,
它通常表达一种紧迫感,例如:
You had better run, the plane is about to leave!
你最好跑起来,飞机就要起飞了。
Keep in mind that "HAD BETTER" has no past tense or question form.
记住一点:had better没有过去时态或疑问形式。
And that's Everyday Grammar.
