Then there are times, when that pattern disappears all together
and if you just look at maps of states, you don't see any geography at all
but if you go and look at the maps of counties then you can see patterns that are very clear and often very persistent
For example, there much of American electoral history Tennessee was a democratic voting state
Now today it's a republican voting state but through most of the history voting for the democratic party
Eastern Tennessee on the other hand very strongly republican voting
From the civil war and before that, actually voting for the Whig party. It's sort of the predecessor of the republican party

That's a pattern persist to these days
much stronger republican voting in eastern Tennessee
and there're other patterns go on for a long time and then boom, suddenly disappear
A lot of very strong patterns that existed in many mid-western states disappeared in the 1980s with the election of president Ronald Regan
And we'll look at some of these as we go through the course patterns
Elazar, political scientist another who tries to make sense of some of this
Daniel Elazar, generation of XXX, a fairly influential book
where he divided states even below the level of state, regions of the country into moralistic, individualistic and traditionalistic regions
linking the original Puritan settlers in New England as well as Scandinavian settlers
in places like Minnesota, Wisconsin and later other places of west with a moralistic political philosophy
