Prior to 1655 when we were colonised by the English

Chinese and the Indians would come over as indentured labour

After that there were other waves of Chinese coming into Jamaica

My great grandfathers on both my mother's and father's side were both from Guangzhou

There is that Chinese influence and when they came over a lot of them would have started businesses – grocery shops, restaurants, laundries

I say no I am from Jamaica – but they do not see the Chinese mix – but it is evident in Jamaica that I am mixed with Chinese

It is very interesting this notion of identity and of race

So a lot of names got changed when you came into the colonies – to fit the English mandate to register in the colonies
